Definition - What does Ramming mean?

Ramming is a method of tunneling by driving a casing or pipe horizontally through the ground using a percussive hammer. The hammer is attached to an open-ended casing, using an adapter. The casing is then driven through the ground by the hammer. The spoil within the casing is removed when the casing is fully driven into place.

Trenchlesspedia explains Ramming

Pipe ramming lacks the precision of sonde-guided drilling or even microtunneling, It's faster than pipe jacking and neither faster nor slower than auger boring or horizontal directional drilling, based on a study done by the University of Missouri and the Missouri DOT. The same study recommends steel casing pipe as the optimum choice when pipe ramming is the horizontal boring method chosen.
