Definition - What does Segmental Sliplining mean?

Segmental sliplining, also known as discrete sliplining, is one of two common methods of trenchless rehabilitation. It is used to repair pipes suffering from infiltration and to restore pipe integrity. The method involves joining a series of pipes and inserting them into the faulty pipe. The segmented pipes must be of a smaller diameter than the pipe into which they are to be placed.

Nothing lasts forever. Pipes that have become faulty due to damage or corrosion must either be replaced or repaired to ensure proper flow. Segmental sliplining is a repair method used in the maintenance of sewage network pipes as well as in other environments. Sliplining can bring new life to old pipes without the higher cost of replacement.

Two forms of sliplining used in trenchless construction are segmental sliplining and continuous sliplining. Continuous sliplining uses prefabricated piping to run the entire length of the pipe under repair. Segmental sliplining comes in shorter lengths that are joined onsite until the job is complete.

The sliplining pipe is called a “carrier pipe” while the pipe to be repaired is called the “host pipe.” The material used in sliplining may be made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or fiberglass-reinforced pipe (FRP). Grout, a form of liquid concrete, is used between the lining and the pipe to make a seal. Sliplining has been around since the 1940s and is now a common practice in trenchless rehabilitation.
