Can you trust your tap water during self-isolation?
Yes, as per the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and U.S. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). On its website, EPA states that:
“The COVID-19 virus has not been detected in drinking water supplies. Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low. Americans can continue to use and drink water from their tap as usual”.
It is natural to worry about simple things like tap water when faced with a situation such as that caused by COVID-19. With the lockdown unexpectedly forcing everyone indoors for an uncertain period of time, anxious people have emptied store shelves of bottled water. Even that won’t last long and ultimately people have to use their tap water.
However; there is nothing to worry about that front as further reinforced by the NAWC (National Association of Water Companies), the AWWA (American Water Works Association) and the AMWA (Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies). David LaFrance, CEO of AWWA said:
“Water services throughout the United States and Canada are prepared to protect public health in normal conditions and in emergencies, and they are committed to keeping water flowing, 24/7. During times like these, safe and reliable water service is essential for drinking and food preparation, hand-washing and carrying away waste”.
“America’s water companies share a deep understanding of the importance of the reliability of quality water and wastewater services in our daily lives and during a public health crisis and are committed to taking steps to help ensure our water systems are functioning both reliably and safely”.
According to AMWA Chief Executive Officer, Diane VanDe Hei:
“These are challenging times for our nation, but despite the many uncertainties regarding COVID-19, Americans should take comfort in the fact that the virus does not spread through drinking water supplies. The nation’s water systems remain committed to the uninterrupted delivery of clean and safe drinking water for the duration of this crisis”.
With the industry leaders putting their weight behind this issue, North Americans can rest assured that their tap water is safe from COVID-19 to consume and use for drinking, cooking, washing and personal hygiene.
The NPWA says that they are well prepared to provide continued water service during this pandemic and have staff and infrastructure in place to maintain continuous water service.
The CDC has assured that the conventional methods used for water treatment such as filtration and disinfection should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.
As of now, there is no evidence that COVID-19 is in the drinking water or is capable of surviving the treatment process.
So, rest assured, stop worrying about your water, and use it to keep yourselves well hydrated, and your surroundings clean. Work towards keeping yourselves, your family and your community safe during the pandemic by following simple hygiene routines, like washing hands frequently and covering your mouth with a tissue or handkerchief when sneezing.
